مسجد السلطان حسن
مسجد السلطان حسن rises in Cairo, Egypt, with towering walls, immense minarets and a façade shaped by calm geometry. Cool stone carries marks of wind and prayer across its monumental surface. A carved gateway introduces delicate patterns before a narrow corridor opens into a bright courtyard. Sunlight falls on the domed fountain at its centre.
The building joins a mosque with a madrasa, bringing prayer and learning beneath one Mamluk structure. Four immense vaulted iwans once served the four Sunni schools of thought. Sultan an-Nasir Hassan ordered the construction after coming to power as a boy. He died before completion, while the architecture continued to bear his name.
Marble panels catch shifting light around the courtyard, where footsteps return as echoes. Some stones were said to come from the pyramids, linking ancient and Islamic Egypt. The vast interior holds a striking contrast: powerful walls outside, surprising peace within.

The myTuur app is free, and once you are standing at a spot its story starts by itself.
Spots like this one are the stops myTuur strings into tours through Cairo. In the app, each story begins where you stand: walk up to a spot and it starts, read it on screen or listen as you go, then follow the route to the next one.
What is myTuur?
