Rathaus

The Rathaus in Augsburg is a Renaissance town hall designed and built by city architect Elias Holl. The building continues to serve Augsburg’s city administration. Its façade carries the Reichsadler and the copper Zirbelnuss, a pine cone that represents Augsburg. Two onion domes rise beside the front gable. Inside, the Lower Fletz has marble columns, while the Upper Fletz supports council meetings. The Goldener Saal dominates the building’s interior. This double-height hall combines murals, gilded decoration, large doorways, and an ornate coffered ceiling. Its adjoining Fürstenzimmer contain panelled walls, parquet floors, carved furniture, and coffered ceilings. Wartime damage led to extensive reconstruction of the building. The restored Rathaus houses exhibitions on Augsburg’s history and partner cities, while the Golden Hall hosts ceremonies and concerts. The Lower Fletz hosts temporary historical and political exhibitions. Its restoration returned the exterior to its historic appearance and revived the interior’s decorative character. The site is wheelchair accessible for visitors. The Rathaus ranks among the most significant secular Renaissance buildings north of the Alps.
