Kriegerdenkmal

The Kriegerdenkmal in Augsburg represents a network of war memorials across former independent districts. Augsburg has no single central memorial for the whole city.

These sites connect local soldiers, regiments and communities with changing forms of historical remembrance. Their settings include squares, barracks, cemeteries and church surroundings.

The Siegesdenkmal on the Fronhof commemorates the Franco-Prussian War and the foundation of the German Empire. Regimental memory shapes several historic monuments across Augsburg.

Other memorials honour the Fourth Field Artillery Regiment König and the Third Infantry Regiment Prinz Karl von Bayern. Some memorials moved or changed as streets, barracks and neighbourhoods developed.

A limestone column from Haunstetten stands in a cemetery, while a Lechhausen memorial disappeared after removal. Pfersee’s memorial stood before the Herz Jesu church and was renewed by Michael Kurz.

The Fischmarkt once held a war column in Augsburg. The Kriegergedächtnissiedlung in Hochfeld adds a settlement to Augsburg’s varied forms of commemoration.

Together, these places show how military loss entered local landscapes and community memory. Augsburg’s memorial landscape preserves distinct district histories rather than one unified civic monument.

Kriegerdenkmal therefore links monuments, neighbourhoods and the ways communities remember those lost in war.
