Vleeshuis

Vleeshuis stands in Antwerp, Belgium, as a former guildhall and market, later a theatre, artists’ studios, and museum. It began as the centre of Antwerp’s butchers’ guild.

The present building rose near the cattle market in the early sixteenth century, replacing an earlier Vleeshuis. Late Gothic architecture shapes the building’s distinctive silhouette.

Red brick and white sandstone create the bacon-layer pattern, while limestone, bluestone, and slate complete its material palette. Inside, a great hall resembles a church.

Stairwell towers and crow-stepped gables identify the structure as secular rather than sacred. Vleeshuis later housed a theatre and artists’ studios.

The museum traces Antwerp’s musical history through instruments, books, manuscripts, paintings, and models. Music and Antwerp’s dance traditions anchor the collection.

Displays connect minstrels, bell ringers, opera, church music, domestic music, public concerts, and dance after eighteen hundred. A reconstructed bell foundry and Van Engelen workshop present musical craftsmanship.
