معبد أبو سمبل

Abu Simbel Temple rises from the desert beside the shimmering waters of Lake Nasser in southern Egypt. Four seated figures of Ramesses II face east, each carved from rock and reaching almost twenty metres high. Smaller figures of Queen Nefertari, Ramesses’s mother and his children stand between the colossal legs and along the base. Golden cliffs, dry air and an endless horizon frame the monument beneath a deep blue sky.

Inside, cooler chambers hold carved scenes of battles, offerings and royal devotion to Amun-Re, Re-Horakhty and Ptah. At the sanctuary’s far end, four seated statues wait in the half-dark. Twice each year, sunlight travels through the temple and illuminates Re-Horakhty, Amun-Re and the deified Ramesses, while Ptah remains shaded. This alignment has worked for more than three thousand years, even after the entire complex moved.

The Aswan High Dam threatened to submerge the temples beneath Lake Nasser in the 1960s. Engineers and archaeologists cut the complex into more than a thousand numbered blocks and rebuilt it 65 metres higher. The smaller temple dedicated to Nefertari stands nearby, while the larger façade keeps its silent gaze toward the rising sun.
