't Huntien
’t Huntien is a small stone artwork set into the facade of a building in Zwolle. A small dog looks out from the stone. Local tradition links this carved figure to the former St. Michaëlstoren and a fire caused by lightning. A little dog once lived in that tower. According to the legend, flames killed it, while later stories place its remains beneath the collapsed tower. The story still leaves its ending uncertain.
The stone has marked the building since 1665, when a cooperage stood here during Zwolle’s Hanseatic period. Later, tobacco, shoes and leather goods filled the premises. Restorations preserved the facade through a shop fire and a partial fire in the snack bar below. Look beneath the dog for the inscription “reno 2000”. The carved year 1669 keeps the tower legend visible beside a detail that survived changing businesses and repairs.
