Oorlogsmonument Het Engelse Werk

Oorlogsmonument Het Engelse Werk stands in Het Engelse Werk park in Zwolle as a memorial connected with the Second World War. A small dolomite column marks this historic place. Its grey-green dolomite carries a heraldic crest in relief and records Cornelis Bakker, Albert Brouwer and Hans Marius Koopal. Jacob Koorn, Alfred Schnell and Eva Schnell Jolowicz also appear. The people named here were executed during the occupation as a reprisal for resistance activity. The memorial includes Jewish and non-Jewish victims alike. Several victims had hidden from persecution or forced labour, with some connected to Oldebroek and Berkum. Hans Marius Koopal was sheltered by the Tensen family. The remains were later moved to places including Westerbork and Den Burg, while this park retained the memorial. The surrounding park offers a quiet setting for reflection. W. Groeneveld initiated the monument, which was later unveiled in Het Engelse Werk. The stone column preserves their names for remembrance. The monument links Jewish and non-Jewish wartime histories with Zwolle and the surrounding region. Local schools include the memorial in educational work. Het Engelse Werk gives the memorial a defined place within Zwolle’s landscape and wartime history.
