Grote Markt
Grote Markt forms the central square of Zwolle’s historic centre, on one of the city’s oldest sites. A former ford crossed the Grote Aa here. The river was filled in during the Middle Ages, and buildings then shaped the square around it. Its history includes markets, public announcements, punishments and executions. The square remains surrounded by historic buildings, including the Grote or Sint-Michaëlskerk. The church is also known as the Academiehuis. In the centre stands De glazen engel, a green glass statue of Zwolle’s patron, the archangel Michael. Herman Lamers created the statue. Facades around the square preserve restored house names and architectural details from earlier periods. Grote Markt eleven displays a sundial from the eighteenth century, while In den Hoofdwaacht occupies a former guardhouse. The square’s stone and cobblestone paving leads towards streets such as Diezerstraat and the narrow Korte Ademhalingssteeg. Shops, homes, restaurants and terraces give the surrounding buildings an everyday role. Regular markets and public events bring activity to this historic setting. The square connects Zwolle’s medieval foundations with its cultural and social life. Its buildings, paving and central statue make the Grote Markt a readable introduction to the old city.
