De Wilde Deerne
De Wilde Deerne is a statue in Zwolle that recalls the city’s legend of a girl found living in the wild. The story identifies her as Anna Maria Jennaert. Local accounts place her discovery near Kranenburg, after reports of missing honey, milk, and garden vegetables. Farmers captured the girl on Agnietenberg near Zwolle. Records describe her arrival at De Misverstand, where the widow Van Orten cared for her in Zwolle. The surviving account says she ate only plant-based food. A newspaper notice linked the unidentified girl to Anna Maria’s family in Antwerp through distinctive physical details. Anna Maria and her mother reunited in Antwerp.
