Xhamia Muradie

Xhamia Muradie stands in central Vlora as one of Albania’s oldest and best-preserved Ottoman buildings. Its outer walls display a distinctive pattern of red-and-white bricks. The mosque took shape in the mid-sixteenth century, during the early Ottoman period in Vlora. A central dome covers its square prayer hall. A single pale-stone minaret rises beside the building, giving the structure a strong vertical line. Earlier Byzantine structures once occupied this same site.

During Albania’s communist era, religious practice was banned, while the building survived as a cultural monument. Its architect remains undocumented, although scholars associate its style with Mimar Sinan’s Ottoman architectural world. No direct attribution to him is recorded. The mosque stands within modern traffic, preserving a landmark amid Vlora’s changing urban landscape. The building serves as an active place of worship and represents Vlora’s layered history. Visitors encounter Ottoman design, Byzantine layers, and distinctive brickwork in one Albanian architectural landmark.
