Spanische Hofreitschule
The Spanische Hofreitschule stands inside Vienna’s Hofburg, preserving classical dressage through the training of Lipizzaner horses. Its white Winter Riding School, built between 1729 and 1735, creates the setting for performances. The hall measures about 55 metres long, 18 metres wide, and 17 metres high. Above the imperial box, a portrait of Emperor Charles VI receives a salute before each presentation.
The tradition reaches back to the first recorded Viennese riding school in 1565. Lipizzaner stallions progress through Remontenschule, Campagneschule, and Hohe Schule, developing obedience, collection, balance, and strength. The final stage includes pirouettes, passage, piaffe, and one-tempi changes. Selected horses perform the levade, capriole, and courbette, known collectively as the airs above the ground. Riders train for years, beginning without reins or stirrups before guiding young stallions themselves.
Public performances expanded after the Habsburg monarchy ended in 1918, opening courtly equestrian tradition to wider audiences. A presentation moves from young stallions’ early work to advanced exercises associated with Olympic dressage. The Pas de Deux pairs two horses in mirrored movement, while the School Quadrille brings eight riders together. Brown tailcoats, bicorne hats, white buckskin breeches, and black boots complete the riders’ traditional appearance. Gold-plated bridles mark some of the advanced horses’ equipment.
