Ronacher

Ronacher stands in Vienna as a theatre shaped by architecture, music and repeated reinvention. Its theatrical spaces now host musicals, operettas, dance and singing performances. Wheelchair access makes the venue easier to experience. Modern lighting and sound systems support productions on a technically equipped stage.

Ferdinand Fellner the Elder and Ferdinand Fellner the Younger built the original Wiener Stadttheater between 1871 and 1872. A fire destroyed the building in 1884. Anton Ronacher commissioned its redesign, which opened in 1888 as a concert and ball house. Electric lighting, a ballroom, a hotel, promenades and a conservatory gave the rebuilt venue a social character. Tables and chairs replaced conventional seating, allowing guests to eat, drink and smoke during performances.

Later decades brought radio studios, television productions, vaudeville and an alternative stage for the Burgtheater. A major renovation lowered the stage floor by about two metres and added advanced machinery, including a turntable and lifting platform. The orchestra pit accommodates up to 60 musicians. Günther Domenig designed the extension, while the Austrian Ecolabel recognises its sustainability work since 2025.
