Torre dei Lamberti

The Torre dei Lamberti rises above Verona’s historic centre, close to the balcony associated with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Brick walls and white marble mark its changing medieval structure. From the panoramic terraces, you can see Verona and the surrounding area across a full 360-degree view.

Construction began in 1172 at the request of the Lamberti family, then a powerful force in Verona. Lightning struck the summit in May 1403. Restoration began in 1448 and lasted sixteen years, adding the octagonal bell chamber built from brick and white marble. A clock arrived in 1779, replacing the failed clock on nearby Torre Gardello.

Marangona signalled fires, working hours, and the hours of the day. Rengo summoned citizens to arms or called the city council, including during Verona’s 1797 Easter revolt. Three hundred sixty-eight stairs trace the inner perimeter, while a transparent elevator reveals the architecture on the ascent.
