Strijkplank
Strijkplank is a bronze public sculpture by Jorien Rooijmans-de Kruyff van Dorssen in Utrecht. You see an ironing board carrying a shapeless piece of clothing across its surface. The familiar household form appears detached from its usual work, function, and setting.
Rooijmans-de Kruyff van Dorssen placed the work in Utrecht in 1983, using an everyday object as her starting point. Her figurative sculptures often examine recognisable forms through bronze and altered presentation. This was the last piece she cast in bronze before exploring dried clay, plaster, fabric, and iron. Later works turned towards time, the body, rhythm, and concentration.
The quiet arrangement belongs to Utrecht’s public art landscape, where ordinary surroundings meet works by the same artist. Nearby examples from her wider body of work include Kinderzetel and Boom met schapen. The draped clothing remains the detail that changes an ironing board into something strangely still and unfamiliar.
