De Denker

De Denker is a bronze sculpture by Lotti van der Gaag, placed along Utrecht’s Maliebaan sculpture route. Van der Gaag created the sculpture in 1951. Its woman figure reworks Auguste Rodin’s famous Thinker through a lighter, more playful presence. The woman figure appears lighter and even smiling. Rather than presenting thought as solemn and fixed, De Denker suggests impulses, fears, and the unpredictability of inner life. Its bronze surface carries an expressive, archetypal form. Van der Gaag’s primitive, archetypal figures connect this work with the visual language associated with COBRA. She encountered COBRA artists while studying in Paris. The Maliebaan route presents modern Dutch sculpture in public space, with particular attention to works by women artists. Utrecht placed De Denker along the Maliebaan in 1991. At a Maliebaan crossroads, the sculpture meets pedestrians with a work that connects postwar Dutch art, public space, and inner experience. The route grew from Utrecht’s public art initiative.
