Barricade

Barricade is a bronze sculpture by Fernando Sánchez Castillo, standing outdoors in Utrecht’s park on the Beukenpad. The work forms a physical barrier across the main path, where familiar vehicles and protest materials create an arresting street scene. A Citroën 2CV, Fiat 500, Vespa, tyres, flags, rocks, and wood appear together, all cast in bronze.

Created in 2009, the sculpture draws on student uprisings in Paris and Turin during 1968. Those makeshift barricades become a monument to democracy, resistance, and people opposing injustice and oppression. Bronze links these ordinary street objects to monuments traditionally associated with power, triumph, rulers, and military display. Here, that durable material preserves signs of conflict while shifting attention towards freedom and collective action.

Sánchez Castillo, born in Madrid in 1970, often examines dictatorship, revolution, liberation, and symbols of authority. His work transforms vehicles, tyres, and scattered street materials into a lasting scene along Utrecht’s path. Lifelike bronze surfaces make the vehicles seem ready to move, although they remain fixed across the walkway.
