The Screw
The Screw is a sculpture by Bertram Bartl and Caius Burri on the facade of Ulm's Institute for Orthopaedic Research and Biomechanics. The sculpture dates from 1987 and uses stainless steel and paint. Its oversized screw form appears to drill through the building's eastern wall, creating a direct link between sculpture and structure. The design reflects the research conducted inside the institute. Bertram Bartl supplied the original concept, while Caius Burri developed and executed the design. Its screw model comes from clinical practice used worldwide. Geometric forms pierced by the screw represent cross-sections of the tibia and ulna, giving the work an anatomical dimension. Stainless steel and paint shape its industrial appearance. As part of the University of Ulm's Kunstpfad, The Screw places contemporary art beside orthopaedic research and biomechanics. Ulm brings those fields together on one campus.
