Stadthaus

Stadthaus stands on Münsterplatz in central Ulm, where modern architecture meets the Gothic Ulmer Münster. American architect Richard Meier designed the building in Ulm. His design uses linear and curving forms, Spanish Rosa Dante granite, and an inclined roof. A central open staircase connects the building’s levels. The architecture complements and contrasts with the Gothic style of the nearby Ulmer Münster. Photography and modern art shape the Stadthaus exhibition programme. A permanent downstairs exhibition presents the archaeology and history of Münsterplatz, the site of a former monastery. The place later housed a Latin grammar school.

The ground floor also contains Ulm’s tourist information centre and various public services. The building organises and co-produces cultural activities across art, science, politics and contemporary music. Its main hall welcomes concerts, lectures and discussions. The exhibition programme also includes architecture and environmental planning, while offering a platform for young artists. The venue supports public cultural exchange in Ulm. The building was completed in 1993 and became a listed national heritage monument in 2019. Public debate shaped its arrival beside Ulmer Münster.
