Smart Circular Bridge Ulm

Smart Circular Bridge Ulm is a pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Ulm, Germany, within a European sustainable-construction project. Its structure combines flax fibres, bio-based resin, and foam blocks. Vacuum infusion joins flax-fibre mats with resin, creating a strong, lightweight main structure. Robot-assisted railings form triangular bundles from flax fibres. The resin partly comes from recycled PET bottles and by-products of biodiesel production. The bridge promotes circular construction by reducing waste and supporting material reuse. Forty-two sensors monitor deformation, cracks, and material wear. Engineers receive these measurements in real time through the structural health monitoring system. The bridge stores CO₂ during its lifetime and releases it when materials decompose or undergo recycling. Life-cycle analysis tracks environmental impacts from production through disposal.

Integrated bridge sensors also turn pedestrian movement into sound. Weight and speed influence tones played through speakers, creating natural, percussive, and game-inspired sounds. The soundscape changes with the time of day. The project uses collected data to improve future bridges, building supports, and wind-turbine blades. Smart Circular Bridge Ulm is one of three demonstration bridges. It shows how renewable materials can support strong, safe, functional infrastructure.
