Alter Friedhof
Alter Friedhof in Ulm is a historic park between the Georgskirche and Pauluskirche, in the city centre. Once known as Allerheiligen-Friedhof, it preserves gravestones from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries among today’s green spaces.
For centuries, the grounds served as Ulm’s burial place, first outside the city walls and later as the city’s only permitted cemetery after the Reformation. Nineteenth-century expansion added Catholic and Jewish sections, cemetery walls, a mortuary and a chapel designed by Theodor Veil. The cemetery closed by the end of that century, and the site became a public park by 1949.
Forty plaques form a history trail through the cultural monument, offering brief biographies of notable people buried here. Old gravestones, the Veil chapel and a playground now stand together, bringing Ulm’s past into everyday city life.
