Schloss Rauenstein
Schloss Rauenstein rises on Rauhhalde hill in eastern Überlingen, above the shores of Lake Constance. The neobaroque villa presents a high base floor, side projections, pilasters, corner stones, cornices, and sculpted reliefs. Two mansard roofs and a central pointed roof give the building a distinctive silhouette visible across the surrounding landscape. A public park extends around it, with a chestnut avenue and views towards the lake.
Built for Swiss cavalry officer Otto Ziesig, the grand house later served a French general, a district governor, an agricultural school, and an agricultural office. Extensive renovation restored the villa, which now accommodates the Schloss Rauenstein Academy, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, and school facilities. The grounds also host meetings, workshops, and events, while walking routes connect the park with fields, vineyards, and other Überlingen gardens.
The southern slope contains an apple educational trail preserving old and regional Lake Constance varieties. Its trees support studies of disease, pests, and natural resistance, adding practical horticulture to the estate’s architectural character. Relax beneath the chestnuts, then follow the paths towards the lake and the orchard landscape.
