Badturm
Badturm stands beside the lake in Überlingen, rising five stories from a square base at the southwestern corner of the old city wall. From here, the landing place and lakeside promenade frame this surviving fortification.
Built probably in the early sixteenth century, the tower formed part of a defensive ring protecting Überlingen from attacks across the lake. Diagonal loopholes pierce its corners, allowing defenders to fire sideways. Around 1560, a five-metre earthwork beside the structure became a gun platform and gave the earlier Dammturm its name. The city wall disappeared in the 1860s for the lakeside promenade, while this surviving section remained. Later, the upper three floors served as guest rooms beside a spa and hotel. Heinrich Zschokke and Ludwig Uhland spent time here during stays in Überlingen.
Today, the surrounding green belt follows the old fortifications, with moats offering shade and cooler air on summer walks. Villa Seeburg stands beside the tower, built in 1919 in the Art Nouveau style.
