Adolf Thomsen

Adolf Thomsen is a sculpture by Trygve Thorsen in the church park beside the cathedral in Norway. Its quiet figure seems to listen across the small lawn. The memorial recalls Thomsen, who became the cathedral organist on 4 April 1883 and taught music throughout his life. He conducted choirs and ran a music shop serving the region. He also organised concerts that raised funds for the church, making him a force in local musical life. His work connected organ playing, teaching and organised singing across the town.

His melody for Elias Blix’s “Barndomsminne fra Nordland” became a northern anthem. After his early death in 1903, singers carried it through homes, choirs and wartime exile. The tune gave northern longing a voice that travelled beyond the cathedral. Choir members pass with scores, while children cross the grass beside the church. The sculpture stands where music, memory and everyday life meet.
