Thermen am Viehmarkt

Thermen am Viehmarkt brings Roman foundations and modern architecture together beneath a monumental glass structure in Germany. Ancient stone walls, bright glazing and open archaeological remains shape the view.

Roman houses first occupied this ground before the foundations became public baths in the fourth century. Their rooms once held bathing, conversation and relaxation. Later layers preserve Roman streets, channels, a medieval rubbish pit and cellars from a Baroque Capuchin monastery. Construction work uncovered the remains in 1987, and architect Oswald Mathias Ungers designed the protective glass enclosure.

Red granite lines across the plaza trace the original Roman street routes. Exhibitions and events now take place among the preserved ruins, with wheelchair access available.
