Gertrud Schloss
In Germany, a small brass Stolperstein for Dr. Gertrud Schloss lies among the ordinary paving stones. Gertrud Schloss was a poet, feminist, lesbian and Social Democrat. During the Nazi period, persecution targeted her Jewish heritage, political convictions, gender and identity. Deportation killed her and her brother Heinrich Schloss.
Artist Gunter Demnig created this Stolperstein as part of a remembrance project placing stones at victims’ last chosen addresses. The small brass surface interrupts daily movement with one person’s name. Further relatives also faced persecution and murder, linking her story to a wider family tragedy. The quiet glint keeps poetry, courage and dignity present in the pavement.
