Tempio della Sibilla
Tempio della Sibilla stands in Tivoli, on the acropolis of ancient Tibur, beside the Temple of Vesta. Its travertine podium rises 1.76 metres above the acropolis plateau.
Built in the second century BC, the Roman temple uses a pseudoperipteral plan with Ionic columns along the cella walls. Four Ionic columns once marked the front, but only two survive. Tuff stone remains beneath the structure, where the substructure extended the acropolis plateau. The building measures 15.9 by 9.15 metres.
During the Middle Ages, the sanctuary became a church dedicated to Saint George, with its first recorded mention dating to 978. Paintings, stucco decoration, and the entrance wall of the cella have disappeared. Its dedication remains uncertain, with Albunea, Tiburnus, and Hercules among the proposed possibilities. The two surviving front columns also lack their capitals.
