Monumentul Fecioara Maria

Monumentul Fecioara Maria stands in Timișoara, sheltered inside a small Roman-style chapel. Carrara marble shapes the Virgin, while six Belgian granite columns frame the structure.

Gheorghe Doja was executed here in 1514 after leading a peasant uprising against the nobility. A cross and Virgin Mary icon first marked the place, followed by wooden and stone images. The present monument dates from 1906, following a design by architect László Székely and sculptor György Kiss. Catholic nuns funded an earlier statue in 1877, before the ensemble received its current form. Jesuit processions once stopped here, and people still light candles and pray beside the chapel.

A Hungarian inscription commemorates the Virgin and Gheorghe Doja’s death at this site. Restoration followed damage in 2012, preserving a landmark where religion, legend, and Timișoara’s history meet.
