Carmen Sylva
In Timișoara, Carmen Sylva connects a historic school with a leafy park in the Elisabetin district. The literary pseudonym belonged to Queen Elisabeth of Romania, a poet and supporter of arts and education. The park occupies part of the old fortress esplanade and includes evergreen trees, new plantings, and a large playground. A hexagonal wooden pavilion hosts open-air events beside an artesian fountain with light displays.
The Carmen Sylva Pedagogical National College began in 1881 as a private girls’ school with four gymnasium classes. A rented palace in Cetate later housed its lessons before the school moved into a neo-Gothic building completed between 1902 and 1903. Iacob Klein and Leopold Baumhorn designed the building, whose construction cost 385,000 crowns. By 1936 and 1937, twelve classes served about 600 students there. The school passed through communist reforms, changing names and curricula before restoring its pedagogical section after 1989. In 2002, the Carmen Sylva name returned, while the park reclaimed it in 2007 after a period as Doina Park.
