Wilhelmine

Wilhelmine is a bronze sculpture by Ursula Hensel-Krüger, sitting in a fountain in Westerland’s busy pedestrian zone on Sylt. The seated figure weighs 175 kilograms in all. Her round, playful features and relaxed bath make this artwork a favourite photo spot, surrounded by Westerland’s cafés and shops. She has stood in that fountain since 1980.

Hensel-Krüger modelled the sculpture in clay on Sylt before a Berlin foundry cast it in bronze. Her optimistic art sought joy as relief from everyday hardship. Born in Hamburg in 1925, Hensel-Krüger studied as a guest at Stuttgart Art Academy in 1950 after pursuing art largely herself. The fountain gives her carefree pose a fitting setting.
