Wasserturm Westerland

Wasserturm Westerland rises on the island of Sylt as a cylindrical brick tower, 21.8 metres tall. Its polygonal, tiled roof gives the former railway structure a distinct outline.

Built in 1927, the tower supplied water to steam locomotives at Westerland station, around the completion of the Hindenburgdam. A Barkhausen tank inside held 100 cubic metres, while two rings of small windows lit the brick shaft. After decommissioning in 1984, the building became a residence in 1992, with enlarged windows and additional round openings added near the top. Restoration in 2002 renewed the façade, and triangular dormers brought more light beneath the roof.

The former industrial tower still shows how railway infrastructure can take on a domestic life without losing its original form.
