St. Maria
St. Maria stands in Stuttgart as a Gothic Catholic church, designed by architect Joseph von Egle. It serves the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. Built between 1871 and 1879, the church became Stuttgart’s first Catholic church after the Reformation.
Its three-nave hall includes a transept and three choirs. The 54-metre-long, 33-metre-wide structure presents two façade towers, each rising nearly 60 metres. World War II left the vault collapsed and the towers severely burned.
Restoration under Hugo Schlösser rebuilt the church by 1949, replacing the vault with a wooden ceiling. Otto Habel’s stained-glass windows date from the 1960s and 1970s. Gothic works on loan from the Württemberg State Museum include a crucifixion group in the choir and religious sculptures.
