Karlshöhe

Karlshöhe sits on a ridge in Stuttgart, opening wide views across the city’s southern and central districts. Vineyards, gardens, and winding paths shape the setting. The former quarry’s crater remains visible, while a playground now occupies the hollow below the viewpoint. English-style gardens lead past the Pallas Athene fountain and towards a terrace overlooking Stuttgart. A beer garden fills the former milk bar, offering snacks and drinks beside the panorama.

In the Middle Ages, quarrymen extracted stone here for the Collegiate Church, Old Palace, and Ulm Minster. The site became a park in 1864. During the 1961 Federal Garden Show, the grounds gained the terrace and milk bar that still define part of the visit. The name Karlshöhe commemorates King Karl of Württemberg’s twenty-fifth year of reign, adopted in 1889. At the foot of the ridge, Stuttgart Lapidarium adds another historical stop for an extended walk.
