Berta Franziska Sander
Berta Franziska Sander is remembered at her family’s last residence in Stuttgart through Stolpersteine, small memorial stones set into the pavement. The Jewish family lived there after earlier homes in Rottweil and Zuffenhausen had been taken from them.
Siegfried Sander worked as a representative and belonged to the Social Democratic Party before Nazi persecution destroyed the family’s livelihood. He was imprisoned at Heuberg concentration camp during the first wave of Nazi arrests. Further persecution forced the family into cramped Jewish houses, while Siegfried was reduced to laboring work. The Gestapo later confiscated their belongings and deported Berta to Ravensbrück and Siegfried to Dachau, then Neuengamme.
Berta was murdered at Ravensbrück, and Siegfried was murdered at Neuengamme. Their son Erich escaped to the United States, while the stones preserve the family’s presence in Stuttgart.
