Berliner Mauer
Berliner Mauer stands in Stuttgart's Upper Schlossgarten, on the Kulturmeile between the House of History and the state parliament. This spot presents a segment of the Berlin Wall. Axel Springer SE gave Stuttgart the concrete section through an initiative that supplied every German federal state with one Wall segment. Christoph Grohmann designed its visible surface as a Berlin graffiti artist for this Stuttgart setting.
The twentieth anniversary of the Wall's fall marked the occasion for Stuttgart's gift from that initiative. The concrete recalls Germany's division during the Cold War. The original Berlin Wall divided East and West Berlin from 1961 until 1989, when its fall preceded reunification and the Cold War's end. That history gives the section a clear meaning: democracy and freedom. The Kulturmeile places the fragment among Stuttgart's historical and cultural institutions in the city.
Graffiti covers the fragment, placing a Berlin artist's design beside Stuttgart's state parliament.
