Teatro Central
Teatro Central is a theatre on Isla de la Cartuja, Seville’s former Universal Exposition site in Spain. Its bare natural-stone exterior rises among vegetation beside the water. Gerardo Ayala designed the building, which forms part of Andalusia’s historical heritage and serves the performing arts.
The venue opened in 1992, when the exposition left cultural infrastructure across the island. Banco Central announced plans in 1990 for a venue that would remain after the exposition. Construction lagged behind other Expo projects, while limited concerts tested the facilities. The Andalusian Agency of Cultural Institutions manages the venue and its programme. Its programme includes opera, classical music, traditional theatre, avant-garde work, and folk performance.
Inside, a twenty-by-fifty-metre black box occupies a larger clean volume clad in natural stone. The mobile stage measures eighteen by eighteen metres and extends eight metres backwards or sideways. Its twenty-two-metre hall allows seating to shift between Italian, Elizabethan, arena, and concert arrangements.
