Puerta del León

Puerta del León forms the main entrance to Seville’s Real Alcázar, opposite the eastern end of Seville Cathedral. Set on Plaza del Triunfo, the gate leads directly into the Patio de León, the palace’s first courtyard. Its thick walls and restrained design reflect the defensive character of the Almohad fortress that once occupied this site.

A colourful lion carrying a cross crowns the doorway, made from Triana ceramic tiles in 1892. Beyond the courtyard, you can discover Mudéjar, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture across palaces, gardens and courtyards. The Palace of Peter the First showcases Mudéjar art, while the Casa de Contratación recalls the administration of Spain’s overseas empire.

The entrance brings medieval masonry and Seville’s ceramic tradition together in one compact view. Its most memorable detail remains the bright tiled lion above the weathered gate.
