Glorieta de Goya

Glorieta de Goya stands at the edge of Parque de María Luisa in Seville, surrounded by garden paths and greenery. Two columns, each about four metres high, mark the entrance to this small round plaza. At its centre, a large Ficus macrophylla spreads above the paving and marks the beginning of the park’s botanical route. From here, paths lead towards Plaza de España, other themed roundabouts and deeper garden spaces.

For the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, a replica of Francisco de Goya’s Quinta del Sordo stood on this site. The Madrid house recalled Goya’s final years and his celebrated Black Paintings. After the exposition, workers dismantled the replica, while the present layout took shape through a mid-twentieth-century redesign. The surviving columns once formed the replica’s entrance and now frame the living centre of the plaza. A blue enamel sign carries chips and age marks beside the greenery.
