Fernando el Santo
Fernando el Santo stands in Plaza Nueva, Seville, as a monument dedicated to Ferdinand III of Castile. The square occupies the former site of the Casa Grande de San Francisco convent. Above the pedestal, Ferdinand appears with a sceptre, surrounded by figures linked to Seville’s conquest in 1248. Alfonso X of Castile, Ramón de Bonifaz, Don Remondo and Garci Pérez de Vargas complete the historical scene.
Francisco Javier Cavestany proposed a fountain crowned by San Fernando in 1848, but the project changed direction. Queen Isabel II declined the dedication in 1862. King Alfonso XII laid the first stone on 27 March 1877, and the monument took another forty-seven years to reach completion. Joaquín Bilbao and Juan Talavera y Heredia shaped its final form, after earlier equestrian designs gave way to the standing figure.
The completed work was inaugurated in 1924 during a procession for the Virgen de los Reyes. Each pedestal figure carries a distinct connection to Ferdinand III: son, admiral, archbishop and knight. Together, the sculptures place medieval Seville inside a public square formed from a demolished convent.
