Schweriner Marstall
Schweriner Marstall stands on the Marstallhalbinsel in Schwerin, beside water and green paths overlooking Schwerin Castle. Georg Adolf Demmler designed the classical complex between 1838 and 1842.
Two long wings form an almost enclosed courtyard around the former riding hall. Massive outer walls, half-timbered interiors, purlin roofs, and round-arched openings shape its architecture. The eastern lake-facing façade stretches 167 metres, while corner buildings rise beneath flat tent roofs. Horses, carriages, equestrian training, theatre, and sport all occupied these spaces over time.
Today, the former riding hall serves as a museum entrance, while two Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ministries use the building. Extensive renovation took place between 2003 and 2007, and the complex joined the UNESCO World Heritage Residenzensemble Schwerin in 2024. Walking beside the water reveals the building’s long façade against the castle view.
