St. Rupert
In Germany, St. Rupert stands as a church whose Romanesque beginnings still shape its layered architectural appearance. Stonework from the late eleventh century anchors the building. Later additions include a nave from the fourteenth century, a choir completed in 1405, and Baroque interior decoration. The Baroque interior adds colour around the older structure.
The 1690 high altar shows Duke Theodo receiving baptism from Saint Rupert in a vivid painted scene. Saint Rupert brought Christianity to Bavaria and beyond. Images along the nave present the saint’s missionary work. In the north choir, a sacrament house contains sculptures of Rupert and other saints.
The organ preserves a case from around 1774 and ranks as the city’s second-oldest. Its technology was renewed between 1850 and 1860. Since 2006, the church has formed part of UNESCO World Heritage. Old gravestones from the former cemetery remain against the exterior walls.
