St. Paul
St. Paul is a church in Germany with a simple cubic form, set among high-rise buildings in a newly developed neighbourhood. Designed by Franz Xaver Gärtner, it opened in 1976 and rises in stepped levels that follow the sloping ground.
The complex brings together a parish centre, kindergarten, hall and youth rooms around a square worship space. Exposed brick, natural wood and colourful windows create a calm interior, while the central altar follows the communal arrangement encouraged by the Second Vatican Council. Erich Schickling’s altar wall and Friedrich Koller’s bronze furnishings add distinct artistic detail.
A restored Christ figure from Cologne, created around 1790, stands on the south wall. Outside, a 24-metre bell tower assembled from prefabricated sections holds three bells and a carillon.
