St. Michael

St. Michael rises above its surroundings in Germany, occupying the highest ground with a distinctive tower beside the chancel. Max Wittmann designed the church, completed in 1929. Its single hall narrows towards the choir, while the tower gives the exterior a clear vertical accent. A wooden bell tower stood here before it. Inside, a diamond-patterned vault uses the Zollinger method and soft contrasting colours to create a measured geometric rhythm. Original coloured glass brightens the altar area. Figures by Max Reiger, who studied under Guido Martini, add human presence to the church interior. The fully mechanical organ dates from 1986. Georg Jann built the instrument with pipes arranged across two keyboards and a pedal, giving the hall a strong musical focus. The building’s solid hall, geometric ceiling, and filtered light connect its modern construction with the local Catholic community that established it. The high ground makes its tower easy to recognise. St. Michael joins architecture, sculpture, coloured glass, and organ music within one parish church.
