Ura e Gurit

Ura e Gurit stands in the heart of Prizren’s old town, between Arasta Bridge and Nalet Bridge. Its stone walkway connects Shatërvan Square on the river’s left bank with Saraçhane on the right. Built by Ali Bey in the sixteenth century, the pedestrian bridge uses precisely cut stones, lime mortar, and rounded arches in an oriental architectural style.

The original structure measured about thirty metres and carried three arches, with the central arch rising highest. The bridge now extends seventeen metres, with a ten-metre-wide, five-metre-high main arch and a walkway slightly over four metres wide. A stone railing about forty centimetres high borders the paved crossing. Lumbardh riverbed works sealed the left arch in the 1960s, while roadworks damaged the right arch in 1963.

A flood in November 1979 destroyed the entire bridge, prompting Prizren’s residents to begin reconstruction on 5 June 1982. The restored crossing reopened on 17 November that year, and state protection has covered it since December 1948. Its smallest arch measures just over one metre across and about one and a half metres high.
