Triumphtor

Triumphtor stands in Potsdam at the corner of Schopenhauerstraße and Weinbergstraße. This arch marks the entrance to the Winzerberg in Potsdam.

Friedrich August Stüler and Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse designed the gate for King Friedrich Wilhelm IV in 1850 and 1851. Its planned triumphal road was never completed.

The structure formed part of a larger scheme linking viewpoints and palace buildings along Sanssouci Park’s northern edge. Financial constraints limited that project to a few completed sections.

Triumphtor combines brickwork with terracotta reliefs shaped by the Schinkel school. Tobias Feilner and Ernst March produced the ceramics, while Hermann Schievelbein and Gustav Bläser created the sculptural work.

Reliefs inside the arch show warriors departing and an army returning victorious. Garden-side figures represent architecture, sculpture, painting and poetry.

The front panels present strength, justice, moderation and wisdom beside allegories of the railway and telegraphy. A burning torch and winged wheel represent steam-powered travel and the distances that railways could cross.

Insulators and a lightning-struck telegraph wire represent communication across distance. These industrial symbols appear beside ancient garments, classical forms and an arch inspired by Rome’s Arch of the Argentarii.

An inscription connects the gate with Sanssouci and records its dedication to Wilhelm I. Restoration work from 1998 to 2000 included treatment of the terracotta reliefs.
