Spola
Spola is a Corten steel sculpture by Herbert Mehler in Schiffbauergasse, Potsdam. Created in 2012, it rises 450 centimetres high while measuring 116 centimetres in width and depth. Its tall, bi-concave form suggests organic structures, plants and flowing growth.
Mehler welded steel sheets into compact volumes, then shaped them with convex and concave curves and a lamellar surface. These details soften the metal’s weight, giving the sculpture an almost weightless appearance and a warm, lively presence. Born in Steinau near Fulda in 1949, Mehler studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg from 1972 to 1976 after learning from his father, a wood sculptor.
The vertical form brings a gentle, breathing movement to its setting in Potsdam. Against the strength of Corten steel, the plant-like silhouette remains the detail that stays with you.
