Sowjetisches Ehrenmal
At Bassinplatz in Potsdam, the Sowjetisches Ehrenmal combines a Soviet war memorial with a cemetery. It honours Soviet soldiers who died during the Battle of Berlin in World War II. Rows of graves surround an imposing monument built in 1948.
After provisional wartime burials, the cemetery became a permanent resting place for Soviet soldiers. Its central obelisk rises fourteen metres. Sandstone and granite form the obelisk, while four oversized bronze Red Army figures represent a guard, tank driver, marine infantryman and pilot.
The prominent position was intended to remind Germany’s population of Red Army sacrifices in the fight against fascism. Rank distinguishes the graves visually. Monument protection has covered the site since 1987, with international agreements supporting its preservation.
