Siegessäule
Siegessäule stands in Babelsberg Park, Potsdam, as a victory column with the goddess Victoria above it. The park setting places this historic monument at a vantage point facing Friedrich Wilhelm Höhe.
Wilhelm I erected the column in 1866 to commemorate Prussia’s victory in the Austro-Prussian War. Christian Daniel Rauch created Victoria with a laurel wreath, continuing the sculptor’s work in German Classicism through bronze and Carrara marble. A smaller counterpart in Potsdam echoes Berlin’s better-known Victory Column, which also features Rauch’s work.
Reliefs once stood at the base, showing medals from Prussian wars against Denmark, Austria, and France, including the Iron Cross. Above them, Victoria’s raised position connects military memory with a clear artistic signature.
