Jute-Lofts

Jute-Lofts stand in Potsdam as a former industrial building, now converted into residential lofts. Its yellow-brick façade, decorative battlements and large segmental-arch windows create a distinctive Castellated Style.

Built in 1863 for the Deutsche Jute-Spinnerei und Weberei, the factory was founded by the Arntz brothers and the Busch family. It expanded into one of the German Empire’s largest jute mills before economic difficulties brought its sale in 1932. A bombing raid destroyed much of the site in 1945, while the main building survived.

After years of disrepair following the fall of the Berlin Wall, renovation between 2014 and 2017 restored the historic appearance and introduced modern homes. The protected monument still shows how Potsdam’s industrial architecture can carry its original character into contemporary life.
