Heckentheater
Heckentheater is an open-air theatre in Park Sanssouci, just north of the Neues Palais in Potsdam. Green hedges surround the stage, while original plantings connect performances with the historic garden.
Heinrich Christian Eckstein designed the theatre between 1763 and 1769 during Frederick the Great’s reign. After more than 150 years hidden from view, restoration brought the garden theatre back into use. The setting was created for the monarch and his guests after the Seven Years’ War. Today, concerts, plays, readings and receptions take place beneath the open sky.
July brings Theatersommer Sanssouci, when performances fill this carefully preserved space with theatre. Concrete foundations support sound and lighting installations, and wheelchair access makes the venue easier to reach. Restrictions on open flames and lighting help protect the historic garden theatre.
