Campanile
The Campanile of the Friedenskirche rises in Sanssouci Park, Potsdam, as part of a Romantic architectural ensemble. Its bell tower draws inspiration from the medieval campanile of S. Maria in Cosmedin, Rome. Built around 1850, it combines zinc, cast iron, and an iron framework that recalls the Statue of Liberty and Eiffel Tower.
Ludwig Persius and August Stüler designed the surrounding Friedenskirche ensemble from ideas associated with King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. The church forms a three-aisled basilica beside structures including Marly Palace. Corrosion and water damage later threatened the tower’s iron structure and original cast-iron elements.
Restoration reinforced the framework with stainless steel and added a drainage system against further water damage. The work also renewed the historic bells cast in 1849, together with the clock faces and hands. The tower belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage landscape encompassing Sanssouci Park and historic sites across Potsdam and Berlin.
